365 days around the sun with The Velvet Blonde! I am just in awe that it has been a year since this vision of mine became a reality! I have always dreamed of having a blog since high school and never had the courage to go for it. I’m so proud of myself for taking a leap of faith and trusting in this journey. It has been one hell of a first year, so many ups and downs, but I wouldn’t change a thing.
Before I started my blog I put almost two months into researching how to build a website (which I had no clue what I was doing) the ins and outs of blogging, and how to organically grow a following. Pinterest was a huge help when it came to figuring out how to start a blog. I’ve learned so much in the past year and continue to learn new things daily about website design, this little thing called the algorithm, and how to balance a full time job and blogging.
I get asked all the time, why start a blog and can anyone start a blog? First and foremost YES! Anyone can start a blog. If you have a passion for something whether it’s fashion, beauty, travel, or even food you can share with an audience what you enjoy! The why behind my blog is I love putting together outfits and sharing with others the love I have for fashion and writing. I grew up constantly thumbing through fashion magazines, circling every outfit I loved and recreated them in a more affordable way. I still do this years later! I have loved being a go-to for my friends if they needed advice on what to wear for certain occasions or even what foundation they should get. I loved sharing my advice and ideas with them that I really wanted to share with so many others!
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Joel and my family believing in me and helping me so many times along the way. They have been my photographer, given me constructive criticism, and have been my biggest cheerleaders. I am forever grateful for them!
There are so many things I have learned this past year when it comes to blogging and I wanted to share my top four takeaways with you!
Four Blogging Takeaways
- Be YOU
This sounds so simple, but when you really think about it and see what others are doing, you’ll want to do the same thing. People will follow you and want to get to know you better because they find you relatable. Share your story, your day-to-day life (the good, the bad, and the ugly) no one is perfect so if you mess up while recording stories just keep rolling with it, be you!
This is very important when you are first starting out. I finally have a plan in place to help with this! (it only took a year! ha). I plan one day on the weekend for shooting. I try to shoot anywhere from 6-10 looks so I have enough to post for the upcoming week. I would start out by posting once a day. This will help with growth and for your followers and potential followers to get to know you better. I would also post to stories everyday to keep your audience engaged.
- Find Your Niche
I knew I wanted to focus on fashion and beauty. I have also added more lifestyle posts. Find one to two areas you really want to focus on and let that be your driver! What I’ve learned that helps to find your niche/audience is to come up with a fake follower. Give them a name, an occupation, their likes and dislikes and that will help guide you into the right direction.
- Engage and Engage Some More
Find other bloggers in your niche. Engage with their content and really start to build that friendship! Babes supporting babes is something I’m a huge believer in! Make sure you are replying back to comments and they are genuine comments. I set aside 30 minutes to an hour each day to engage with new accounts that I’m interested in and if you like what they are posting, let them know! We are all here to support each other and build each other up!
I hope you enjoyed this post and found it helpful!! Thank you to everyone who has continued to support me on this journey, it truly means the world to me! I can’t wait to see what year two brings for The Velvet Blonde!
